ARE Super League champions Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) making moves to sign a former World Cup winner? If so, who is the player?
Juan Budiman, a follower of Johor football, tweeted that JDT are in discussion to recruit a former World Cup winner who is now a free agent.
Giving a hint of who the player concerned is, he attached three photos of the national Spanish, German and French squads who won the 2010, 2014 and 2018 World Cups respectively.
If this is the case, the only documented free agents are former Juventus striker Fernando Llorente, Manchester City midifielder David Silva, Chelsea winger Pedro Rodriguez, Paris Saint-Germain’s Blaise Matuidi, Lyon’s Nabil Fekir and Bayern Munich’s attacking midfielder Mario Gotze.
Prior to that, a photo of JDT owner Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim with former Barcelona and current Vissel Kobe player Andres Iniesta was uploaded on the Southern Tigers social media.
“It will be a great honour and we are pleased to welcome you (Iniesta) and Vissel Kobe to play at our new stadium in the upcoming AFC Champions League campaign. See you soon,” said Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim.
Japanese first division side Vissel Kobe will face JDT on Feb 12 and April 21 in the Asian Champions League group stage.
Tunku Ismail also posted on his Instagram account, tagging midfielder Leonardo Ponzio with a picture of the duo holding a signed River Plate jersey.
The 37-year-old Argentinian midfielder, who helped his country win the 2001 Under-20 World Cup, is also a free agent.
This year, JDT will be out to defend their Super League and Malaysia Cup titles apart from competing in the Asian Champions League.
