MLS preseason officially hits full swing this weekend, with the rest of the league’s teams reporting for duty one week after the five Concacaf Champions League participants got things started.

All 26 clubs have plenty of storylines worth watching for, of course, and questions to answer in the weeks ahead. But these five stand out for me, whether it be for the promise they’ve shown entering 2020, the scale of the challenges in front of them or the personalities onboard.

Chicago Fire FC

Where to begin? The Fire have a new coaching staff, new brand, new NFL-sized stadium and, to a large extent, a new team this year. With just 17 players under contract on the eve of preseason – one a fresh draft pick and three teenage Homegrowns – the roster is barely half-full. While they’ll undoubtedly add to it in the days ahead, as they did on Saturday with the arrival of striker Robert Beric, the status quo underlines the workload, and time crunch, facing the all-new technical staff.

Beyond that, Raphael Wicky will be a fascinating figure to follow. The Fire’s head coach was convinced to leave U.S. Soccer and move across town less than a year into his tenure as the US Under-17 national team boss. And though that team’s disappointing performance at the 2019 U-17 World Cup dinged his reputation, he’d largely earned positive reviews for his proactive work with that squad, as well as his previous stop at FC Basel in his native Switzerland.

Columbus Crew SC

If the Fire are the definition of a work in progress, their heartland counterparts in Ohio are the inverse. The Crew finished last season on a high note as Caleb Porter & co. found a rhythm down the stretch, and they built on that further with some promising winter moves, highlighted by the arrival of Darlington Nagbe and club-record acquisition Lucas Zelarayan.

The Yellow Football Team look to be crafting a fluid, technically-gifted starting lineup with a fearsome central-midfield core. Now the challenge is to hit the ground running this spring and prove their bonafides in a crowded Eastern Conference field.

LA Galaxy

Chicharito. Need I say more?

OK, fine, I’ll say more. Beyond Javier Hernandez’s expected (blockbuster) signing, the Galaxy have reeled in Aleksandar Katai and Sacha Kljestan, extended the loan for Cristian Pavon and re-signed Sebastian Lletget, providing some luxurious attacking options for Guillermo Barros Schelotto as the OGs of El Trafico aim to punch back in the battle of Los Angeles.

Have they fixed that painfully wobbly backline? Ehhh, I’m not so sure about that. LA might just have to win a lot of 3-2 and 4-3 games again this year. But that’s just fine for most of us neutral viewers.

Montreal Impact

As a rebuilding side who also happen to be one of MLS’s CCL representatives, the Impact face a daunting start to their first season under Thierry Henry, who despite his legend status as a player remains very much an unproven product in coaching terms. And their opening foe, Costa Rican powers Saprissa, will be a very tough out.

That said, Henry’s footballing intellect is unquestionable and IMFC have a proud history of punching above their weight in Champions League. Can they get comfortable again at “The Big O,” their hulking, historic second home for cold-weather matches?

Seattle Sounders

The defending MLS Cup champs also have to figure things out quickly given the early start brought on by CCL, and they have the quality and desire to make a real run at the thing.

Problem is, they’ve bid farewell to some key figures this offseason and are paper-thin at the back, particularly in central defense, where the freshly-signed Shane O’Neill and Xavier Arreaga are their sole specialist options at present. And their CCL opener, a potentially dicey visit to Honduras’ Olimpia, is barely a month away. It’s a real job looming in front of coach Brian Schmetzer and his staff.

Burnley v. Leicester City  — 9 a.m. ET, on NBCSN and NBCSports.com

Burnley are free falling and there doesn’t seem to be a safety net in sight.

The Clarets, who are two points removed from the relegation zone, head into a tough three-match window without striker Ashley Barnes. Recuperating from a hernia surgery, the 30-year-old is set to miss bouts against Leicester, Manchester United and Arsenal – to name some.

But quite possibly more alarming than that is the team’s recent form. Losing seven out of their last nine, just two points divide Burnley from the drop zone. Sean Dyche‘s team are clueless in the box, scoring one goal in four league bouts. Trouble looms over Turf Moor.

But even then, Dyche, who has made Burnley a force to be reckoned with in the past, believes his side are still a threat.

“They are a good side,” Dyche said about Leicester. “We are on a tough run of form, but I don’t think they are naive enough to think it is turn up and get the business done. We are not a million miles away.”

Can Burnley pull a Southampton and stun a top-four bound Leicester?

“We weren’t at our best [against Southampton] and we didn’t have the energy and intensity that we would have liked,” Brendan Rodgers said ahead of Sunday’s early match.

“We work twice as hard and that’s what we’ve done after every setback. We still have a lot to improve on.”

The Foxes had a rare full week to train, so one can bet that Rodgers is serious about his word.

INJURIES: Burnley —  OUT: Barnes (hernia), Gudmundsson (hamstring) | Leicester City — OUT: Ndidi (knee), Amartey (ankle), James (match fitness)

Liverpool v. Manchester United — 11:30 a.m. ET, on NBCSN and NBCSports.com

Manchester United are a part of the exclusive anti-Liverpool club for more than the obvious reason.

Yes, the North West Derby is one of the league’s most heated rivalries, with countless flashbacks in its 203 meetings during its over 100 years of history.

But these two, star-studded squads led by Jurgen Klopp and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, respectively, also have a permeating rivalry of their own. The Reds, who have yet to taste defeat this season, have dropped points to only United.

It can be argued that Sunday’s bout may be Liverpool’s most complicated and least favorable, despite maintaining an immaculate record at home. This is the “big one” that many didn’t particularly circle on the calendar.

“It’s a very, very important football game,” Klopp said. “Very important. We have to learn how to deal with games like this in the right manner. We haven’t done bad in the past but we can still improve.

“Old Trafford [a 1-1 draw in October] was a good example, [we were] not at our best because of their quality. We have to make it more likely we’re at our best.”

Solskjaer had his tactics in place last time around; a small injection of final quality and the team would have crushed Liverpool’s aspirations of matching the Iinvincibles or Manchester City’s points record.

“The last two performances [against Liverpool] at Old Trafford we have drawn twice and been close to winning both games, so we’ve got some games to look back at and that will give us loads of belief… if we perform to our best we have a chance to win,” Solskjaer said.

Sunday presents itself as the final chance for United to pull the upset, and reaffirm why they’re a part of the exclusive club to begin with. But Liverpool are slowing becoming invincible themselves.

INJURIES: Liverpool —  OUT: Lovren (hamstring), Clyne (knee), Keïta (groin), Milner (hamstring) | Manchester United  — OUT: Tuanzebe (hamstring), McTominay (knee), Pogba (ankle)

Australia and New Zealand have confirmed a joint bid to co-host the 2023 Women’s World Cup. The trans-Tasman neighbours submitted their bid to Fifa before Friday’s bid deadline with aspirations of hosting the expanded 32-tournament in under four years’ time.

It is the first cross-federation bid for a Fifa World Cup, and if successful, will be the first Women’s World Cup held in the southern hemisphere.

Twelve host cities were announced as part of the united “As One” campaign, five in New Zealand and seven in Australia – Adelaide, Auckland, Brisbane, Christchurch, Dunedin, Hamilton, Launceston, Melbourne, Newcastle, Perth, Sydney and Wellington.

The final is slated to be held at Sydney’s redeveloped 75,000-seater Olympic stadium in Homebush.

Matildas captain Sam Kerr said it would be a “dream come true” to run out in front of a home crowd at a World Cup.

“There is so much untapped potential, not just in Australia but right across Asia and the Pacific region, that I really do believe we would offer something incredibly special to Fifa,” she added. “I really believe that Australia and New Zealand would be incredible hosts to take the game forward.”

Fifa will reveal all the official bid books on Friday in Zurich, with Colombia, Japan, Brazil and Argentina also seeking to win hosting rights.

Football Federation Australia president Chris Nikou said he hoped a successful bid would deliver benefits for the game in the lead-up to, during and after the tournament.

“The decision to host the Fifa Women’s World Cup in 2023 in Australia and New Zealand, two leading nations in the promotion of women’s football and gender equality, will accelerate the game at both the grassroots and professional levels, lighting a path for future generations of footballers, administrators, and fans in Asia-Pacific,” Nikou said.

Australia and New Zealand have recent history of staging successful major international tournaments – the 2015 cricket and the 2017 rugby league World Cups were co-productions.

“We know New Zealand and Australia can work as a team to deliver something unique and world class, while also creating a legacy for women and for football in our countries and across Asia and Oceania,” said Grant Robertson, New Zealand’s Minister for Sport and Recreation.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic reached a mileston 150 Serie A wins and set a new record in doing so when he helped AC Milan beat Udinese 3-2 on Sunday.

The San Siro outfit are unbeaten in the three games in which the 38-year-old striker has appeared since re-joining the club at the start of January.

An Ante Rebic double and a goal from Theo Hernandez edged the Rossoneri past Udinese for a second straight league win.

While Ibrahimovic was not among the goals, it was a special result for the former Sweden star, as he became the fastest player to reach 150 wins in the Italian top-flight since the three points for a win era began.

The former Inter and Juventus hero needed just 222 games to claim his 150th victory, putting him well ahead of former midfielder Esteban Cambiasso, who needed eight more games to reach that number of wins. Italy international Lorenzo Insigne was the third fastest, taking 232 games to get there with Napoli.

Ibrahimovic’s career in Italy began when he joined Juventus from Ajax in 2004 and went on to win two Serie A titles, though both were later revoked in the wake of the Calciopoli scandal.

After two years with Juve, he switched to their fierce rivals Inter and enjoyed a successful three years, winning three league crowns and a Supercoppa Italiana.

An ill-fated move to Barcelona followed in 2009 and he lasted just one year in Pep Guardiola’s squad before he was loaned and then sold to AC Milan, where he went on to claim another Scudetto.

Back for a second spell at the club after spending time at Paris Saint-Germain, Manchester United and LA Galaxy, Ibrahimovic has helped Stefano Pioli’s men climb up to seventh in Serie A. They are just two points behind Cagliari, who occupy the last Europa League spot.

The Los Angeles Galaxy have replaced Zlatan Ibrahimovic with Javier Hernandez and made the Mexican striker the highest paid player in Major League Soccer.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic parted ways with the Los Angeles Galaxy in mid-November after spending two seasons in Hollywood and the club have finally found his replacement. According to the Los Angeles Times, the Los Angeles Galaxy have completed a deal to secure the services of Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez from La Liga outfit Sevilla.

The report claims that the transfer fee remains unknown, but the American giants have offered the 31-year-old Mexican international a three-year contract. In addition to offering Hernandez a multi-year contract, the report goes on to claim that the Los Angeles Galaxy have made Hernandez the highest paid player in the league. His predecessor, Ibrahimovic, claimed that honor last season with a salary of $7.2m.

Hernandez has big shoes to fill in Los Angeles. Ibrahimovic supported his arrogance off the pitch with stellar performances in the number nine shirt. The Swedish international, who has returned to AC Milan, managed to score an astonishing 53 goals in 58 games for the club, so the pressure to perform at an elite level is certainly on the shoulders of Hernandez.

Great Signing for Los Angeles

The Los Angeles Galaxy have expressed interest in Hernandez many times in the past, but they finally got their man after years of trying. Hernandez was hopeful he could find success at Sevilla, but the former Manchester United and Real Madrid star only made nine league appearances for the Spaniards. This move to Major League Soccer, and Los Angeles specifically, comes at the perfect time.

Hernandez still has some good years left in him and he is eager to end his career on a high note, which is exactly what the Galaxy need after the departure of the best striker to ever wear their jersey. It is also important to note that the Latino community and fan base will be booming more than ever in Los Angeles. With another Mexican star in Carlos Vela lighting up the league with Los Angeles Football Club, the arrival of Hernandez will transform that rivalry into one of the greatest derbies in all of North America.

Hernandez is Mexico’s leading scorer with 52 goals, so one can only imagine the reception he will receive among Mexican-American fans across the United States. Furthermore, Hernandez brings quality experience and veteran leadership to the squad. Over the course of his career, Hernandez has played in 308 league games in Mexico, England, Germany and Spain, and scored 115 goals in the process.

Next: Olivier Giroud is off to Inter Milan

The Los Angeles Galaxy are known for finding ways to land top players around the world and they have maintained their reputation with the completion of this deal. All eyes will be on Hernandez to see how quickly he settles in, and he must be ready to handle the Ibrahimovic comparisons from day one. Overall, this was a solid signing by the Galaxy.

FIFA will now implement an assessment process, including inspection visits to the member associations which are expected to take place across January and February 2020. Once finalised, the evaluation report will be published on FIFA.com and all eligible bids will be presented to the FIFA Council, which is set to select the host(s) of the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 at its meeting in Addis Ababa in June 2020.

Following on from the astounding success of this year’s FIFA Women’s World Cup™ in France and the subsequent unanimous decision by the FIFA Council, the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 will be the first edition of the women’s showpiece to feature 32 teams.

“France 2019 was certainly a watershed moment for women’s football, and now it is FIFA’s responsibility to take concrete measures to keep fostering the game’s incredible growth. With the FIFA Women’s World Cup generating an unprecedented interest across member associations, we are ensuring that the process to select the hosts is seamless, objective, ethical and transparent. By the time the FIFA Council announces the hosts, there should be no doubt whatsoever as to why that choice was made,” said FIFA President Gianni Infantino.

Key topics and evaluation

The bid books cover a wide range of topics important to FIFA’s assessment, such as the event vision and key metrics, event infrastructure, event services, commercial matters, and human rights and sustainability.

FIFA has developed a robust evaluation model for the bidding process that comprises the following key components:

  • risk assessment: an assessment of the risks associated with certain criteria, applying a risk rating
  • technical evaluation: an assessment of certain infrastructure and commercial criteria, applying an evaluation system established by FIFA
  • description: a summary of certain relevant information provided in the bid and highlighting potential issues (without a technical evaluation or risk assessment)

The technical aspect of this bid evaluation model includes an objective scoring system to rate and weight each of the infrastructural and commercial-related criteria.

A full overview of the bidding process, including details about the evaluation model and scoring system, is available in the following Guide to the Bidding Process for the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023™.

The selection of the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 host(s) by the FIFA Council will be open and each ballot and the related votes will be made public.

Swedish striker reaches 150 Serie A wins faster than any player in the modern era

Zlatan Ibrahimovic has become the quickest player to reach 150 Serie A wins in the three-point era and the Swedish striker has Ante Rebic to thank for reaching the milestone on Sunday.

AC Milan defeated Udinese 3-2 at the San Siro after Rebic scored the winner deep in injury time to seal successive wins as the club closed in on the Europa League places.

Jens Stryger Larsen opened the scoring for Udinese in the seventh minute – a lead the visitors held until three minutes after the break when Rebic levelled.

Theo Hernandez handed the hosts the lead in the 72nd-minute before Kevin Lasagna equalised for Udinese with five minutes remaining.

Rebic then grabbed the dramatic winner in the third minute of injury time as Ibrahimovic, who was given his first start after scoring last weekend against Cagliari, reached the 150 wins milestone in a record 222 games.

The previous record was held by Argentine midfielder Esteban Cambiasso – a former teammate of Ibrahimovic at Inter Milan – who achieved the feat in 230 matches. The record includes every season since 1994/95, when Serie A introduced three points for a win.

The 38-year-old Swede did not get to celebrate a goal in front of the home crowd but he has provided a confidence-boost for the northern giants who have taken seven points in three matches since his return.

The victory lifts Milan to eighth in the Serie A table, one point off the Europa League berths. Udinese are in 13th position.
